Sathvikaa Shankar is one of the leading young exponents of Bharatanatyam. She started training under Guru Smt. Anitha Guha at the age of six and has since then evolved into a mature yet vivacious performer.

For Sathvikaa, every performance is not only an illustration of emotion and accuracy, but also a sacred and spiritual journey. With the depiction of movement and expression, Sathvikaa communicates with her audience in a unique style. She lives every character she portrays, and this artistic power that she possesses further draws the audience towards her performance.

A graded artiste of Doordarshan, Sathvikaa has given many acclaimed solo performances at many prestigious venues around the world. She is a recipient of the National Balshree Honour from the President of India, His Excellency Dr APJ Abdul Kalam in 2005, as well the CCRT Scholarship from the government of India. She has also been honoured with titles such as “Padma Bharathi”, “Nrithya Jyothi”, “Best Dancer” from Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, and is an empanelled artiste with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).

Sathvikaa has also adorned major roles in her guru’s dance productions, making herself a versatile artist whose forte lies in theatrical histrionics and impromptu innovation. Most recently she played the lead character in Parishvanga Pattabhishekam in which she portrayed the role of the monkey god Sri Hanuman with boundless energy and imagination. From the whimsical and comical encounter between to Hanuman and Lankini, to the poignant conversation between Hanuman and Sita, to finally the tear-jerking and surreal embrace between Hanuman and Rama, Sathvikaa switches easily between emotions while still maintaining the sthayi (central characterization) of Sri Hanuman with bravura.

Besides carving a niche for herself in Chennai’s arts scene, Sathvikaa has also proved her mettle in academics. A Chartered Accountant by education, she is simultaneously adding to her Bharatanatyam repertoire by undergoing rigorous training in the other facets of dance such as nattuvangam, choreography, teaching, as well as musical and dance theory. She has quite a number of students in USA, Canada, Dubai for whom she takes online classes. She intends to pursue this art form with utmost passion and devotion, and she seeks your blessings to flourish into a well-rounded artist.
